I know I’ve had fun exploring different genres with you, and part of me will miss giving you new content every week. For those of you who’ve been here since the beginning, I hope I gave you something new to listen to and enjoy. Well, friends, we’ve reached the end of the road with these blogs. It was just masterfully done, and even if you don’t think Bollywood is for you, this soundtrack definitely has something for everyone and I genuinely think you’re missing out if you don’t listen to it. This allows the song to begin to sound fuller as it progresses, which I think is really cool.Įvery song on this soundtrack is worth listening to. Finally, I love that the song starts off with just Bhuvan’s voice, but then as the scene progresses, and more of the townspeople begin to support him, they each get little solos in the song, and each one is sung by a different singer.

It works really well with the theme of the movie and it is executed really well. Second, I love the mix of orchestra music and traditional Indian percussion. His ability to set stories to music is unparalleled. Rehman, is one of the most amazing composers in Indian history, and has been nominated for several Oscars.

The lyrics of the chorus translate approximately to “Friend, listen up, what are you afraid of?/ This land is ours and so is this sky/ So come on, let’s do this.” I think the way the words fit the scene is just genius. First, the message of unity is just amazing. This song is the scene in which Bhuvan convinces the rest of the village to accept the challenge and fight the British to give them a better quality of life.

The other song that I love in the soundtrack is called Mitwa, which roughly translates to “friend”. This song opens with, “Oh hey beautiful/ I promise you/it’s obvious/ I’ve fallen in love with you and only you/ if I live without you, what kind of life am I actually living?” The English translation, I think, removes the beauty, but in Hindi, the words just come together to make my standards for men significantly higher. No offense to modern pop music, but more times than not the “love songs” tend to have lyrics that I would not really associate with romance. This contrast just adds a layer of complexity to the song. She sings her part in English, and the instrumental music changes to violins and lighter orchestra music from the tabla and other percussion beats that characterize Gauri and Bhuvan’s interaction. The reason I like it is because it also incorporates the captains sister, Elizabeth, as she fell in love with Bhuvan while she was helping him. The song is him declaring his love for her, and vice versa. It’s a love song, and features Bhuvan and the girl from the village who has loved him her whole life, Gauri. The first song that I loved from this soundtrack is called O Rey Chhori. It is a feel good movie, and if you ever have four hours to spare ( it is that long, I’m not exaggerating), I highly recommend it. With much hesitance, the villagers accept the challenge, and, with the help of the captain’s sister, end up beating the British. The conditions are simple: if the villagers win, the British leave if the villagers lose, their tax is quadrupled.

The captain challenges him and the village to a game of cricket, which at the time was Britain’s favorite pastime. One of the residents, Bhuvan (my mom named my brother after the character in this movie), decided enough is enough and called out the British captain on this injustice. The residents of this village live in extreme poverty and hunger, as the British were taking their crops and taxing them excessively. It follows the story of this rural village in India during the time of British colonization. Lagaan is one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s been a while since I’ve done something that isn’t in English, so it seems fitting to do some Bollywood for my final blog. Songs: O Rey Chhori, Mitwa, Ghanan Ghanan, Radha Kaise Na Jale
